Grove Life | Spring 2021

A Round of Events Phillip Gabes, Head Professional

I t is hard to believe that we are in the final month of our tournament “Season.” We have had so many wonderful events to this point, but not to worry, we still have some great events to look forward to. With Boca Grove being as active as ever, there is no better time to get involved!

Masters Week is almost here and there is no better place to spend it than Boca Grove! The fun begins on Wednesday, April 7 with our first ever Masters Par 3 Shootout. This new event will be great! We will turn every one of our holes into a Par 3! The Masters Week festivities will continue into the weekend with our “MGAMasters Blind Pairing” on Saturday, April 10. Be sure to enjoy

Masters Sunday in Chippers Sports Bar to see who will earn the green jacket this year! OurMGAseasonwillwinddownwith“Closing Day,” to be played onApril 24.This past month we hosted our annual Men’s Invitational on March 11-13. We were able to host a full field of 72 players and have a wonderful, safe event. This event features a round-robin format that culminates with a “Shootout” of the flight winners. We congratulate Brandon Rippo and his guest Johnny Matute on their performance in taking the crown this year, well done! The WGA has some great events leading up to their closing day, including the “Bloody Mary Shootout” on April 6. This year’s WGA “Closing Day” will be a party that you will not want to miss. Our “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” theme will bring you right back to the 80’s as we close out the season in style on April 27. The “Spring 9 & Dine” will take place on April 18th in the afternoon, with dinner following play. As we head into the summer months, we will begin our annual aerification practices with the golf course being closed onMay 3 and 4. We will finish off the month of May with our “Memorial Day Mixer” on May 31st. Alittle fun fact that Imust sharewithyoubefore I go. Did you know that we have had five hole- in-ones already this year? Those individuals are Cheryl Budd, StephanyMaillery, JimPerilstein, Nancy Belkowitz, and Eli Stuart. Just to give you a little perspective, in the two years of 2019 and 2020, together, we had five hole-in-ones here at the club. Let us view this as a sign that 2021 will be a fantastic year to come!

The Course by Ellen Astrove

For eighteen glorious holes “where it never rains”, Poppy would say. I pondered that. He then took his young grandchildren for a favorite golf cart ride to look for turtles. They took turns driving while sitting on his lap— over twenty years ago. Now, on Mondays I walk breezing in pristine grass. For eighteen holes, I sport a smile. Now granddaughter designs landscapes, grandson aspires to play like legends— Palmer, Player, Nicklaus, Tiger. Until Mondays, I never fully appreciated “the game” as the masters refer to it. How the aim of a ball instructs some of life’s great lessons—while driven, ironed, wedged, and putted. Then bogeyed, parred, birdied, or eagled into a small hole. For five miles call me Callaway, TaylorMade or Titleist— a little white ball with hexagonal indentations. I travel eighteen holes. Pace with precision. Soar over fairways, avoid sand traps and water hazards, looking to land and sink into the “hole in one” on a Par 3—for the trophy

of living that one perfect moment.
