H ave you ever noticed how children have the amazing ability to make you feel like the world is much more fun, more interesting, and less complicated than you sometimes think it is?
Children are constantly learning – learning how to walk and talk, add and subtract, read and write. But what if the roles were reversed and we had to learn from them? What would we learn? Here are a few timeless lessons we can learn from our children. Laugh Every Day What is every adult’s objective when playing peek-a-boo? That laugh. That laugh is everything. Children have the beautiful ability to find joy all around them. With their help, we can all learn to enjoy the little things, smile to welcome a new day, and add a little humor to our routines. Did you know that there is a country that measures its success in Gross National Happiness? The GNH Index is instituted as the goal of the government of Bhutan in its Constitution, enacted on July 18, 2008. Fun fact: Laughter is in fact contagious and just listening to recorded laughing could evoke fits of giggles (which is why television studios use laugh tracks on sitcoms).
“Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from
learning, but for children, play is serious learning.” – Fred Rogers
Bee Active Fun fact: Essential to the growing brain, play stimulates development of the erebellum, which coordinates movement, and the frontal lobe, which regulates decision-making and impulse control. Nurture Friendship Children find true joy while playing with friends and they love making new ones. Fun fact: In friendship, children develop an awareness of how another person’s thinking and feelings may differ from their own. This becomes the basis for
learning how to share, how to compromise and how to negotiate. So, as we welcome the new year and watch the children around us navigate, explore, learn and grow, let’s consider the mind us of, making our futures that much brighter.
