Sense of Belonging | April - June 2019 GROVE LIFE

Mission To deliver a boutique lifestyle set in an oasis of uncompromising beauty with facilities and activities that encourage healthy mind, body experiences, a strong sense of community and lasting friendships.

Your General Manager Mr. Gibson Renaissance Creates Sense of Belonging, Camaraderie at Boca Grove. W ow did that go fast! The 2018- 2019 season is coming to close and our plans for summer are

to our team is not only appreciated but helpful. We anticipate that our members positive attitude will carry forth outside the community and create opportunity for new members to join our community and shape the future. Our Glimpse in the Grove stay and play program has been very successful in its inaugural year. This continues to be one of the best marketing programs to allow prospective members to experience the Boca Grove lifestyle first hand. Your referrals and positive conversations with interesting prospects are critical to the future success of this program. If you would like more information about this program, please contact Jennifer Jolly at 487-5300 or jjolly@bocagrove.org. April, May and June, I find to be the nicest months of the year in South Florida. April provides us early with the NCAA National Championship for both women and men’s division. Quickly following we have “The Masters” live from Augusta. Hopefully you’ll catch our “Hot Damn Country Glam” event on Saturday, April 13. Passover and Easter are both on the following weekend and will provide everyone opportunity to reflect with family and friends. May kicks off with our second annual Kentucky Derby Party. The fastest two minutes in sports. Mother’s Day leads into Memorial Day and our Memorial Day Barbeque poolside. This June as the kids complete their sessions at school and prepare for summer vacation, we will offer kids camps for all ages. Tennis, golf, fitness, pool games and even culinary with Chef Dominic will all be part of this new program offered for members and guests. It sounds like we are all going to be very busy this summer. We can’t wait. Happy Days,

greater and more exciting than ever. It seems like yesterday we were celebrating our opening event “Get Your Motor Running”. A lot has happened in such a few short months. We have so much to be thankful for as the Renaissance of Boca Grove continues to move forward creating commitment and camaraderie from our community and membership. Progress on the new Sports and Wellness Center continue to be positive with anticipation for ground breaking hopefully in late fall. As we continue our journey, we are focusing on organizational alignment. This is best described by a degree of which key elements of an enterprise are tightly integrated and working in concert together to drive member satisfaction. Premier clubs have this type of total alignment and our Board of Directors and team of associates are engaged and fully committed to this principal. The opportunity to work towards uniting our club membership as one and providing a strong sense of community is within our grasp. It will take commitment from all sides. Our future has never been brighter. As well as alignment, the Board is leading us through attainable goals that include financial responsibility, the completion of the new Sports and Wellness Center, future Viability and sustainability of our membership programs, lowering delinquencies and increasing property values, renovation, sales and leasing for vacant Le Jardin units and a strong commitment on overall community enhancement beginning with common grounds, lighting and safety. As we end our first quarter, we are enthusiastic about the level of membership participation. We have taken the time to listen and make necessary changes to meet the needs of our membership. Members that have taken the time to share their concerns have been surprised to find that it is a priority of ours, to shape the future based on membership feedback. We are listening and appreciate your interest in making Boca Grove the best it can be for all members. Your commitment in carrying forth positive reinforcement

Happy Summer! Michael J. Gibson General Manager/COO

Sense of Belonging by Jennifer Jolly

T here are many reasons people join a country club. You could poll 10 members here at Boca Grove and where their list of reasons why they chose to live here will likely be varied, somewhere in their answer all will say “the people.” People are the most important aspect of a club. It is what creates the club’s culture and that sense of belonging - the feeling of being connected, accepted. In this issue of Grove Life, we are going to share with you a little about our community, how it is connected and how we work toward building that sense of belonging in everything we do. From our individual daily activities to the large all-inclusive special member events we host, we strive for personalized service that benefits all and fosters the human connection that makes us not only grow but thrive as a community. I could not be prouder of our most recent new event, Ladies HappyHour. This event came fromyou, ourmembers. A request from a few ladies who wanted to bring all the ladies together in one night to get to know each other better. This event jammed packed our sports bar and overflowed onto the upper veranda. It was wonderful to see everyone from tennis players to golfers, from food friendly to fitness savvy, from condominium owners to single family homeowners, equity to non-resident golf … everyone was represented, sharing stories, learning more about each other, strengthening their bond as women and members of our club. The event was so successful, the men have asked for their own! You will see more information on both further on in the magazine. Our Iron Chef competition was another wonderful event that brings community and sense of belonging together. Here the teams are built around the department heads. Each team has a theme, prepares a menu and, with the help of one of Chef’s culinary professionals, executes that menu and shares small plates with the entire group to vote on themost delicious option. Voting is open to the entire membership – you do not need to cook nor be on a team to enjoy the bounty. For those of you that did not attend this year, please plan to attend next year. It is GREAT fun!! Kathy Whitehurst’s team was the WINNER this year, there’s a nice photo on the back cover. Super Bowl Sunday, our Wild Animal Show, Kid’s Pizza & Cupcake Night … so many interesting and exciting events that bring us all together. I feel very lucky to have found all of you at Boca Grove, to have that sense of belonging is such an incredible community with a very diverse and excitingmembership. It ismy privilege and honor to serve each of you. Enjoy the magazine!

Beautification Brings Balance & Belonging by Kathy Whitehurst, Assistant General Manager

The Architectural Control Committee is promoting the POA’s Beautification Program by encouraging our residents to replace the swales, the grass between the street and sidewalks of your homes. Fresh, green, healthy sod consistent throughout our community will enhance the curb appeal for our properties as there’s nothing quite like a well-manicured, luscious lawn. Together with the beautiful calusa and podocarpus hedges that provide privacy between neighbors as well as a shared view, a sense of balance and belonging is formed that elevates our property both as the hidden gem it is as well as a community of like-minded members. This pride often translates into higher home values. We have our first Boca Grove CommunityOpenHouse this year on Sunday, April 7. Please take a look at your home and consider upgrading your landscaping with replacement shrubs and plants, adding new mulch and a

fresh coat of paint. These are the easiest and best ways to revamp the look of the exterior of your home. Upgrading our properties is a Win-Win situation in that it creates a more beautiful environment to live in while improving property values and increasing marketability. Balance, a sense of belonging and overall aesthetics can positively impact the desirability of living in Boca Grove. It is what will breathe new life inside of our walls and keep our club relevant, active and alive. Your Architectural Control Committee, chaired by Darrell Nickerson, is committed to enhancing the aesthetics of our community. Please be reminded that all exterior changes must be approved by the ACC. Contact Property Manager, Kathy Whitehurst, at kwhitehurt@ bocagrove.org.

I t’s springtime and Boca Grove’s Beautification Program is in full swing! As you drive through Boca Grove you immediately notice Cassias, Starbursts, Powder Puff, Tabebuias, Hong Kong Orchids and the three shades of purple of the “Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow” trees. All these beautiful trees, some indigenous to Florida, some brought here from other states and nations, grow together on our property as if they belong together, creating a balance in scent, size, color and aesthetics.

H ere at Boca Grove we know your four-legged fur baby is not only a sought-after companion but also a beloved family member. We pride ourselves on being a dog friendly community. The Boca Grove LOVES Dogs!

only way we can maintain that status is to insure we are all being responsible owner/parents to our pups by following the rules and guidelines to keep them safe and our community clean. We do love our pets here at Boca Grove and our Yappy Hour in March was a festive and fun occasion. Since that time, we have noticed an uptick in members bringing their pups to club during lunch and brunch. Please be reminded that no pets are permitted in the clubhouse nor on club grounds (including golf course, tennis courts, tennis building, pool, playground and fitness building), unless they are designated service animals. A service animal is defined as a dog that

has been individually trained to do work or perform tasks for an individual with a disability; the task(s) performed by the dog must be directly related to the person’s disability. The service dog is permitted to accompany the individual with a disability to all areas of the facility where members and guests are normally allowed to go. If you have a service dog, please register your pup with us at the club so we are aware. A few other rules to remember, all pets must be on a leash at all times. Always “scoop up” after your pup. Many diseases are transmitted by animal waste. Properly disposing of your pet’s waste will keep all our fur babies safe and healthy.

Safety is Our Top Priority in Your Community Scott DeAtley - POA Community Operations Manager

T he following are topics/ issues that have been brought to my attention by you the membership, as well as the Board of Directors. I hope by identifying some of our more common complaints we can all work together as a community in promoting safety and security within our beautiful community here at Boca Grove. Golf Cart Safety • Operators must possess a valid driver’s license. • Operators must obey all motor vehicle traffic rules and regulations. • Always keep hands, arms, feet and legs inside the golf cart while in motion. • Always obey all traffic rules and regulations. • Never overload the golf cart with people, equipment and other objects. • Never operate the golf cart with more passengers than it is designated to hold. • Never leave the keys in the golf cart when unattended. Stop Signs Help us make Boca Grove safer! Did you know that we have approximately 125 children in our community? A stop sign means that you must bring your vehicle to a complete stop at the sign or stop “bar.” Always come to a full stop. Alarms Your first line of defense when used, alarm systems are one of the most effective ways to deter a burglary at your home. Always set your alarm. Parking No parking is permitted on our sidewalks. Avoid a parking violation and never park across a sidewalk. Always be observant for pedestrians and especially children on the sidewalk

when entering or exiting a driveway. Always yield to pedestrians. Speeding Residential speeding is a common problem. You can eliminate it. When residents are surveyed, speeding is commonly at or near the top of the list of complaints. Stop signs and speed limit signs alone are not “traffic calming,” as they require enforcement. As mentioned above, we have several children, elderly, bicyclists, walkers, joggers, etc. All of us have seen the signs that read, “Drive Slowly My Daddy Works Here!” or “Drive Like Your Children Live Here!” It is our heartfelt mission to educate our community and ask that you “self- govern” yourselves and avoid the possibility of receiving a fine from the POA or a tragedy. Traffic calming is an approach to reducing vehicle speeds and vehicle volume on our streets. Neighborhood safety campaigns are the least coercive means of trying to gain compliance with neighborhood speed limits. There is little empirical evidence to support that compliance is gained beyond a short period of time. Neighborhood traffic safety starts with you! How can you make your neighborhood streets safer? • Drive Slower - Realize that speeding through a residential neighborhood will make very little if any difference in the total time it will take to complete your trip. In addition, driving at slower speeds allows more time to react to the unexpected, such as a child darting out from behind a parked car. Remember that the speed on our streets is 25 mph, except for Boca Grove Boulevard, which is 30 mph. Make a conscious effort to drive 25 mph or slower on all our streets. Remind family members and neighbors of the speed limit. • Avoid Using Local Streets as Short Cuts (Mandarin Drive) – The more we use residential streets as short cuts, the more we disrupt the quality of life in the neighborhood. Neighborhood cut-through traffic

increases noise and pollution in residential areas and results in a greater threat to the safety of our children. • Observe All Rules of the Road - Most accidents occur close to home. • Change Your Driving Behavior – Learn to adopt a different attitude! You should always expect the unexpected on residential streets. It may not be your fault if you have an accident but imagine the pain you will live with if you hit a child or a neighbor! Even modestly higher speeds can mean the difference between life and death for a pedestrian hit by a vehicle • Crashes and injuries are more sever at higher speeds. Walkers Please make an effort to utilize our sidewalks as opposed to walking in the street, especially at night. Lastly, as the end of season draws to a close, please remember that our security team is here to serve you. If you are seasonal and/or plan to be gone for the summer, notify us of the date of your departure and request that we perform a “Closed House Check.” We will attempt to check your home daily, and should we find any irregularities, we will notify you immediately, and determine the next course of action you wish for us to take.

Be Safe!

W hat do Chile, Columbia, Portugal, Puerto Rico and the United States all have in common? They represent your Divas of the Dining! Five women born and raised in five different countries and cultures come together to create a dining experience that brings a sense of belonging, camaraderie and good times. Just like a member at a country club, an employee of a country club typically finds their way here because they share a common interest in service. Above all else, service is most important to these ladies. Your bevy of beauties find that common service thread in the area of food and beverage. Did you know Carla Hull of Portugal, your Food & Beverage Manager, is a secret piano player? Her and Paola Renteria, your Sports Bar Hostess, could perform a duo as Paola has a passion for singing. And where Paola is ambidextrous, Valerie Rivera, your Catering Manager, is a lefty, an identical twin and graduated Suma Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in event and convention planning. Kaitlyn Kelly, your Dining Room Supervisor, also has a hospitality degree and is the eldest of four. Cecilia Kovago, your Grove Room Hostess and Supervisor-in- Training has three sons and loves to travel. Carla and Valerie could start a restaurant on their own with Carla as the Chef and Valerie as the Baker … both dabble with food at home. Both Cecilia and Paola would enjoy bringing their families to said restaurant, especially if it was Italian, as it fuels their love of food while Kaitlyn prefers a glass of wine at home in her jammies to going out. A self-professed nerd of fantasy movies, Carla would be interested in a little road trip with the ladies to Kaitlyn’s home town of Daytona where she became a NASCAR aficionado. Coming from five different countries, travel courses through all of their bloodlines but it’s Cecilia who will tell you it’s her favorite thing. They also share a love of the beach, sports and fitness – Carla is into paddleboard, Cecilia regularly walks the beach as part of her exercise program, Kaitlyn runs … from track at FSU to winning the recent Fort Lauderdale marathon, Paola hangs at the beach for both activity and relaxation while Valerie’s beach activity would be volleyball as she played all through school but she excels at CrossFit. Carla, Valerie, Kaitlyn, Paola and Cecilia … these are your Divas of Dining and they are looking forward to serving you! Divas of Dining Get to Know the Ladies Who Run the Dining Room.

Italian Queen, Rosanna

Hives at Golf Course Maintenance.

Creating the Honeycomb.

Filling Honeycomb with Pollen

Carniolan Queen, Marzanna

O n Tuesday, February 5 our bees were delivered. They have happily taken up home back behind Golf Course Maintenance. Did you know bees are some of the hardest working creatures on the planet? Because of their laborious work ethic, we have flowers to smell, food to eat, honey to savor and wax to create candles and other household goods. Last issue we discussed the fact that we have four hives ergo four queens. Three of our queens are Italian, while the fourth is Carniolan. Carniolan honeybees hail from Slovenia and are much more protective of their environment making this queen the guardian of our hives. We thought Marzanna, Slavic Goddess of Nature, would be a fitting name for this beauty. Antonella, which is Italian for flower, seems appropriate for one of our Italian queens. Not only does the name roll off the tongue like honey but it pays homage to the gorgeous flora and fauna this queen’s worker bees will be pollinating yielding vibrant blooms for you to enjoy. Our last two queens were named by you, our members! Peter Phillips offered up some very clever bee names with BEE in each of them. A few google searches on his recommended From Divas to Queens Welcome Marzanna, Antonella, BEEatrice and Rosanna.

names found that BEEatrice is Italian for “she who makes happy.” Could there bee a better name??

Well, maybe, as we’ve saved the best for last. Our final queen, pictured here, is Rosanna. Rosanna is special for many reasons ... firstly, her name means Gracious Rose. She was also the first queen that I saw and the only one I was lucky enough to watch being introduced to her hive. But the real reason Rosanna is so special is she was named by Shayna Cohen in honor of her Italian grandmother. Al Salopek, of Sierra Bees, will be with us for two hours on Sunday, June 9 beginning at 4:30 pmto educate, raise awareness and demystify the honeybee for children while helping them forma connection to nature. Understanding the importance of bees and how they work together, can deepen their connection and relationship with their community and the world around them. This will be a fun, entertaining and interesting program for children and adults alike.

Food for Thought Rules of Engagement ... How to Make the Most Out of Your Dining Experience.

W ell it sure has been an excit- ing time to be involved in food and beverage! We tried a lot of things in just three months and we appreciate both your patience and feedback as we worked through the creation of a new dining program. As always seems to be the case, the second you “figure it out,” something changes. Our impending change is one of hours in the dining rooms as we approach the late spring and summer seasons. Please see side bar for new hours. The good news is we believe we have the right recipe for success between the Grove Room and Chippers Sports Bar for next season, which will help us with service staffing compliments, hands on teamtraining and budgeting tomake the 2019 – 2020 season one of our best. We have a great group of Dining Divas in the front of the house complimented by Creative Culinary Craftsmen in the back of the house – they will be highlighted

in the July issue. Both teams have made a concentrated commitment to work to- gether to mentor and train our teams to work in tandem, producing a seamless and high touch experience for you, our members. Part of the program includes managing reservation times to insure orders are placed with enough time for the kitch- en to produce Chef Dominick’s fresh and flavourful food. Marcia, Paola and Cecilia will take the lead here. Using our Point of Sale (POS) system to help manage menus items and meal times, they will let you know when a time pe- riod is at its maximum. This, in no way, means we do not want you in the dining room, it simply means that we will need to bump you to a different time slot. We do this to assist the kitchen with produc- ing good food on time but also to man- age your expectations, so you are not sitting around waiting for dinner.

To this, we ask that you honour your reservation times. If your reservation is 7:00pm and you want to enjoy a cocktail at the barwith friends prior to dinner, we ask that you come earlier or set your res- ervation time later. What we find often happens, and this is not new nor unique to Boca Grove, is that members come in, go to the bar, socialize with friend both long time and new, and lose track of time. Then when one member gets up to dine, all the rest follow. Often times member reservations range between 6:30pm and 7:30pm, which are terrific …however, if we have 50 people per half hour and now you all enjoy a cocktail or two together and sit all at 8:00pm there is no way the service team can take your orders all at the same time nor can the kitchen keep up with the tickets. Pao- la and Cecilia will be approaching you at the bar as your reservation time ap- proaches to ensure we do everything we can for a positive experience.

Master Sommelier Emmanuel Kemiji Owner of Miura Vineyards in California & Clos Pissarra in Spain will be at June 5 Fish Shack.

The growth of our staff will continue and although the destination has not been reached, the compass is pointed in the right direction, and we thank you for the tremendous support of us and of the department programming. We have learned a lot about Boca Grove and the membership and our goal remains the same: to elevate the experience and provide the best possible atmosphere for you, the members. For those that will soon be travelling North or West to your Summer homes, we wish you the very best and please let us know if there is anything we can do for you while away. wonderful time here at your Club and had the opportunity to partake in all the offerings within the department. We have received tremendous feedback throughout the year and will look to build on those successes as we move forward. Looking back, we had a recent record number of participants in our One Day Men’s Member Guest in January. The event featured a day full of great camaraderie and golf. Thanks also to our Golf Chair, Jim Perilstein for helping make the event a fantastic one. My thanks also go out to Patti DeRosa and Nancy Belkowitz who Chaired the Couple’s Member Guest in February. The event was so well received, and their input was greatly appreciated. We also hosted ourWomen’sMember Guest on February 28, where the ladies were “swinging with bling” all day long. Special thanks to Kat Latham and Patti DeRosa for Chairing the event and helpingmake the day a great one. I would be remised if I did not talk about The Men’s Invitational in March and thank Gary Greenspan and his Committee he put together (Arny Cohen, Stewart Kasen, Allan Hutensky, Joe Janoura) for all their hard work in making the event a truly memorable one. I don’t think I’ve seen so many laughs and smiling faces over those three days. It’s hard not to remember the Super Bowl Mixer we held on February 10, which featured a field divided into two teams (Rams vs. Patriots). We saw so many of our members dawning their

Player’s Corner Dan Pendola, Head Golf Professional

T h e topic I would like to d i s c u s s in this edition of the Player’s Corner is: How do I stop a bad

know my best three wood shot will carry 230 yards, but if it isn’t my best, I am looking possibly making a double bogey. I try to reason with my ego and remind myself of how I became a Pro in the first place. It wasn’t distance, it was my skills with wedges and short game. I know that I have a better chance knockingmy wedge shot in the hole then I do hit my 3 wood over the water. So instead of forcing the 3wood, I lay up to a comfortable yardage for my lob wedge, knock it close and take my par or bogey at worst. I know there will be other holes that I can attack, but forcing the issue on a couple difficult holes could really ruin my round. I am always doing what I can to hit the ball farther when I practice but when my score is on the line, I know to play to my strengths. You see tour players shooting sub 60 rounds and they all say the same thing, “I had great yardages today and putted well. When I was in trouble I was able to recover”. Even tour players have yardages that are very comfortable to them and some that aren’t. The point here is, if you love your pitching wedge, give yourself more opportunities to hit it! My recommendation is to make your wedges and short game a strength so that you can get the ball near the green and save your score. Remember to spend at least 75% of your practice

time on your short game because you may not be able to hit the ball 300 yards down the fairway but you can always learn how to chip and putt well.

run of scoring? If you are having a rough stretch of scoring during a round, I want you to focus on two things: Don’t force anything and play to your strengths. We all have a favorite club or yardage to play from. Instead of forcing yourself to hit that uncomfortable shot with the 3 wood, hit the club that you are most comfortable with, that will get you down the fairway. A shot struck well with a 7 wood will almost always go as far or farther than a poorly hit three wood. Remember to always work on your weaknesses on the practice tee but during your round you can’t afford to throw away shots. I have found myself in situations during a tournament where my ego can get in the way. Playing a long par four that I wish was a par 5, “You’re a Pro, you can do this”, I tell myself as I have 230 yards to carry the water. I

Femme Fatales of Fitness The Ladies That Know How To Turn the Heat Up.

E n Francais, “femme fatale” literally means “deadly woman”. For most it conjures up a Bond Girl – attractive, seductive, mysterious. They usually use these traits to lead James Bond down a path to danger. With the return of the Marvel Comic series, the modern-day femme fatale is a super hero. She uses her feminine wiles for good, not evil, and somewhere in the mix she has a special power that no one else has and helps her to save the world. Our Femme Fatales of Fitness are similar in that they save our world by keeping us physically fit and healthy. Each are beautiful and charming with a hint of mystery. Tammy Rose actually calls Berkshire, Massachusetts home, coming to us in the winter months. She has two daughters and runs four miles per day. All this activity offsets her love of fine wine and cooking. Tammy’s super power is that she is an ACE Certified Personal Trainer. Just as fitness was a common thread through our Divas of Dining, food is a common thread amongst our Femme Fatales. Georgie Boynton’s family ran and operated a restaurant in her hometown of Rutland, Vermont where she workedmost of her childhood. Dance was also on the agenda growing up as Georgie has 15 years in tap, jazz, ballet and hip hop. Interestingly, her first choice for a career was not in dance and fitness but mortuary science. Georgie found great purpose in helping families during trying times. Her super power of Yoga has grown from her passion for helping people stay healthy in body and mind. The mind can be a mysterious place and Jeanette Tannebaum believes that fantasy is good for the soul. She encourages this through two extremes … a love of watching martial arts cage fighting as well as those sweet, romances found on the Hallmark Channel. Jeannette took her first plane ride at the age of 12 to Japan and spent her last years of high school in an American school in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. Her super power is definitely one of nurturing as she has two grown children, grandchildren and even a great grandchild! Please come visit our Femme Fatales and supplement your daily fitness regime with their super powers. April’s Transformation Challenge is sure to be a hit and don’t forget the Spartan Race on Sunday, April 28. Watch the website for more information on May and June challenges.

A s we journey into the exciting future of our new Sports and Wellness Center, I thought it would be a good time to examine exactly what amenities create a “wellness” center. The Fitness Center/ gym is no longer just a place to lift heavy weights and sprint on a treadmill. While both these activities can still be done, the modern facility is much more diversified in activities and practices. So, what exactly does wellness entail? In 2013 the Mayo clinic released “The Elements of Wellness” which consisted of: - Physical well-being: body weight maintenance and disease prevention with exercise and physical therapy. - Intellectual growth: physical activity linked to increase nerve development in the brain and memory function. - Social interaction: enhancing and creating friendships through group classes and shared interests. - Spiritual fulfillment: not in the religious sense but more enhancing self-worth, confidence, relaxation, stress relief. Yoga, and tai chi are great examples. Thus, the main goal is to create an overall better quality of life for the membership of Boca Grove. This is an excellent segway into April’s Transformation Challenge, which is a six-week program designed to educate membership on fitness routines, food choices and positive daily routes. There will also weekly group workouts and check-ins. In short creating accountability, consistency and safety. We are excited to begin this journey and hope to continue on in a phase 2 challenge later in the year. Because this event has started, a prorated rate is available. Call the Fitness Center for more information.
